I am obsessed with houseplants! On a second thought, I am obsessed with all plants.
How It All Started
It all started on my second visit to Manhattan’s Flower District. Walking down the alleys, I was awe-struck by a beautiful Snake Plant and without any ado, I decided to purchase it. Not to mention I was more captivated by its second name, Mother-In-Laws Tongue, than the plant itself. When I bought it, my Snake Plant was only 6 inches tall. But I wasn’t worried much about its growth once I came to know that Snake Plant, despite being an indoor plant, is very invasive and grows rapidly.
Growing Fondness for Plants
The first time I visited the Flower District was in winter, and it was freezing cold. I dodged in and out of multiple flower shops and then ran home. I hate the cold! The second time I visited, I was shopping for flowers for a client’s wedding. The second time worked like a charm and I had enough time to actually sift through different plant shops and learn about different varieties. My curiosity and interest in plants grew to such a point that during my second visit, I stopped and spoke to a few of the shop owners who were more than welcoming and didn’t mind teaching me a thing or two about plant varieties.
New-Found Hobby – Gardening!
After that second visit, I left feeling like I had found a new hobby. Even though I grew up in dirt (Not Really), my grandfather, who was a farmer in Jamaica, was the one who showed me how to love dirt for its life-giving potential. He planted everything from yams, potatoes, bananas, peas, sugar cane, etc. Not to mention the many fruit trees, oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, apples, guavas that lined up in his field. It is one of those things which living on an island, especially as a child, will linger in your mind forever. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t always fun – especially when it came time to shelling the peas or having to cook the yam and bananas.
Gardening with Mom
It didn’t stop there. I spend my summers in NYC, doing gardening with my mom in her garden. We spent days purchasing and planting flowers. Today, I am an adult who enjoys gardening as a hobby more than anything else. I spend my days learning about new plant varieties. I have an eye for the exotic plant species. Thus, I tend to stay away from the everyday houseplants, that you will find in every home. My passion is to search for unique and exciting plants – plants that make my heart skip a beat when I first lay my eyes on them. Take a plant-lovers word, your plants should make you happy and bring life to your space.
